Sir, —
As a result of discrepancies involving tens of thousands of pounds sterling and euros between the 2021 and 2022 published accounts of the Representative Church Body (RCB) regarding episcopal costs and expenses, I made an enquiry about the matter with the RCB in 2022, which in turn gave rise to further questions on the topic.
It took four years to obtain answers from a bafflingly reluctant RCB, but I am glad to say that I have finally been provided with answers which are to my satisfaction.
The 2021–22 discrepancies that also gave rise to my further enquiries arose from a change in accounting procedure that has now been explained to me, and the further questions have also been answered.
I came to see this long-drawn-out saga as an exercise in seeking due transparency.
It has taken not only a long time but also the support of three people, all distinguished members of the Church of Ireland, who wrote over those years to the RCB urging engagement with me over my enquiries.
They were Baroness Foster, who wrote in 2023; Professor Patricia Barker, who wrote in 2025; and Senator Victor Boyhan, who wrote earlier this year.
They each gave me great encouragement and support, and I wish to place my thanks to them on record.
Indeed, the new Chair of the RCB Executive Committee, since last May, Lyndon MacCann, has also been most helpful.
I am glad that this episode has finally concluded well, with the openness from the Church on such matters that is only to be expected by anyone making genuine enquiries.
Yours, etc.,
The Reverend Canon Ian Ellis (by email)
